What is Self-Reflection

When I was younger, my parents didn’t believe in grounding me or putting me in the corner to reflect on my actions. They actually had a more daunting strategy which included sitting next to my dad on the couch as I reflected in silence and with the occasional parental questioning: what happened, why did you do that, and what can you do next time to make it better?

This was another level of torture as I HATED sitting in silence. However, nonetheless, I did as they asked and listened to my dad, reflected on my actions, and explained my reasoning.

It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that it wasn’t just the act of sitting in silence next to my dad, rather, it was the act of sitting in silence listening to my thoughts and reflecting on my actions. Today, as an adult, I realize that this was a form of self-reflection. A time to think of ourselves, our actions, values, thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and what motivates us. Like many things in life, it definitely isn't easy especially when sitting with ourselves in silence thinking about our actions and consequences. However, as with most things in life, the most difficult times are the ones that give us the greatest rewards, in this case, self-awareness which is the act of having the ability to have clarity of our life, who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world. By doing so it allows us to be our authentic selves physically, verbally, and mentally.

What is the Importance of Self-Reflection?

Practicing self-reflection helps us have greater awareness of ourselves and leads us to see ourselves in greater ways. By doing so, it allows us to have an awareness of ourselves and our life. In fact, according to Tasha Eurlich in her TedTalk: Increase Your Self-Awareness with One Simple Fix, studies have shown that individuals who are more self-aware are more fulfilled, have stronger relationships, are more creative, confident, and are better communicators. 

It also shows that individuals who are successful at self-awareness don't ask themselves WHY because it causes them to linger in the past and present. However, by asking WHAT helps individuals move toward a future of improvement and success.

Fun Fact: Did you know that 95% of people think they're self-aware when in reality it's only about 10-15% of people who actually are?!

Self-Reflection is the act of thinking of ourselves, our actions, values, thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and what motivates us. Self-awareness is the ability to have clarity of our life, who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world. By practicing self-reflection it allows us to have self-awareness. Which allows us to have so much clarity, introspection, and understanding in our lives.
