5 Steps to Build a Strong Personal Brand

What is Personal Branding?

No, I’m not talking about building your product and creating a brand. I’m talking about you! Specifically, how you can brand yourself for the competitive world that we live in and make yourself stand out amongst the crowd with your authentic actions, voice, and the choices that you make. Personal branding allows you to create your authentic self and put it out into the world for others to understand who you are, what you do, and what you’re capable of. Personal branding is built on the idea of how people see YOU, how you want others to see YOU, and how your values represent who YOU are.

How can Personal Branding Benefit You?

According to Ann Bastianelli and her TedTalk: Powerful Personal Branding, personal branding can benefit us in 3 ways:

  1. Lead More

    1. Because those that you inspire will follow you enthusiastically and their followers will also follow your journey.

  2. Win More

    1. Whether it be through interviews, speeches, or negotiations, life is a series of conversations. By understanding what someone truly values in you then you’ll be able to speak confidently without fear.

  3. Earn More

    1. Studies have shown that there is a 10-25% earning increase every year for individuals with strong personal branding.

Self Awareness

  • No, I’m not talking about how you see or think about yourself. I’m talking about how people see you. What’s the first thing that comes to their mind when your name is mentioned? How do others talk about you when you’re not in the room? What’s their reputation of you?

Activity: Ask your family/friends/colleagues to HONESTLY tell you the first words that come to mind when they hear your name.

  • If there’s a word(s) they mentioned that comes off to you as a surprise, consider why and then decide how you want to be defined. Look inside yourself and ask what you need to do in order to prove to others that this is who you are and this is what you’re capable of.

Figure Out Your Goal

  • In order to figure out your goal, you must understand your WHY. Why do you want to be seen as such? Why is it important to you that others see you as you want to be seen? By understanding what you want to be known for and the reasoning behind it, begin making specific goals to work towards your purpose. Ask yourself how your goals will help you become the person you desire to be in front of others.

Create a Mission Statement

  • Most companies and educational institutions have a purpose for their organization listed in their mission statement. It’s important to have this in order to help others understand their purpose, values, goals, and objectives. Likewise, it’s just as important for you to have a mission statement for yourself when creating your personal brand. To create one ask yourself:

    • Who you are

    • What you do

    • Who you do it for

    • What type of transformation you will create

  • Once you create your mission statement, follow it and practice it on a daily basis so that you can create a strong personal brand for yourself that will be seen and felt from others. Remember: Actions speak louder than words!

Tell Your Story with Life

  • Like a good book, a story is best told if it’s an attention grabber and is memorable. That’s because as humans, we like to listen to stories that excite us or that are relevant to our lives. When talking to others, whether it be through casual conversations or public speaking we want to talk as if we’re telling a story. By doing so, our listeners will be compelled to listen and be enthralled by our passion wanting to listen more the next time we speak.

Deepen Your Relationships

    1. While creating your personal brand it’s important that you remember to be transparent and authentic in your voice and actions. By doing so, others will feel more inclined to be vulnerable when speaking to you which will help you understand your audience better.

personal branding

Personal branding has been around since 1997 and has ultimately thrived and driven others to think about how others perceive them. With the competitive world we live in, it’s important that we make ourselves stand out while also being authentic in our actions, voices, and the choices that we make. Personal branding allows us to create our authentic self and put it out into the world for others to understand who we are, what we do, and what we’re capable of.
